As i got in my bmw e60 5 series this morning it wouldn’t start. This problem often happens if the key gets wet or is stored in a humid environment.
You can try wiggling the wheel and rocking the car back and forth, a second key, a jump start, check fuses, lock unlock the car a few times using the blade key, and unhooking the battery for an hour.

Eddie, i agree, it's something more than just wiggling the steering wheel back and forth and the car will start as others have suggested. If backing out, you had the wheel turned and shut it off the wheel would lock, and you might have to grab the wheel and turn it a bit to get the tension off the locking pawl and allow the steering to unlock. The only thing that works is to get out of the car, lock the doors and then unlock them, enter the car and try the ignition once again. I usually have to do this twice and then the electric steering. With the normal steering lock that you need to move the steering wheel a little and turn the ignition key if that's why it won't turn but that's with the ignition tuned to off/lock position.
